Secrets can be hard to keep in the City of Angels, but somehow Terranea Resort has managed to keep a low profile for a decade. A true hidden gem just 45 minutes south of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the property is the only upscale oceanside resort in the Los Angeles area. Its beauty, luxury and panoramic seascape make this retreat feels much more than a mere thirty-ish miles away from the popularity and activity of Beverly Hills.
Located in rancho Palos Verdes, the 102-acre cliffside property has accommodations galore with rooms, suites, casitas and villas. There are four restaurants, several pools, a wellness spa and a golf course– all of which boast incredible views if the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. Whether you’re in LA for business or pleasure, the meticulously manicured grounds are beautiful and worth the trip– even if just for the day. It’s no wonder that this is a popular wedding destination and venue.
Loa Angeles-area residents should also consider this picturesque property for Staycations and Daycations. You might even run into me and Malinda working from the expansive grounds or taking in the sunset during a picnic for two. Get even closer to the ocean via trails that hug the cliff from the highest point on the property, descend past a scenic adults-only pool overlooking the ocean and continue down to a hidden beach– complete with crashing waves that soother the senses.
Service is excellent throughout the resort– whether you’re there for the day or an extended stay. From the moment you enter, the entire property is decorated in a Mediterranean style that adds to the sense that you are further away from Hollywood than you actually are. From the main hotel structure to the casitas and villas that dot the property, there are rooms for every budget– keeping in mind that it’s a luxury resort. And all of them have a view of the ocean. On a recent Staycation we booked a casita with a balcony view of the ocean that made parting a sweet sorrow indeed.
Dining options abound at the resort and we’ve tried them all including the casual sports bar vibe of Nelson’s and the fine dining experience at Mar’sel. Most often we opt for asian fare at Bashi and order the tasty garlic noodles. The adjacent Catalina Kitchen has a varied “New American” menu that has something for everyone and a chocolate cake that Malinda still hasn’t forgotten. Terranea’s most recent addition, Solviva, offers a seasonal farm to table-inspired menu with wellness at its core– appropriate since it’s located in the spa. All of the restaurants have outdoor seating and a view of the ocean. For scenery and cuisine there are no bad options.
To keep visitors occupied, there are activities as varied as nature walks, bird watching and even moonlight yoga. We’ve attended a Harvest Moon Yoga session that was equal parts soothing, exhilarating and breathtaking as we stretched, contorted, inhaled and exhaled on the ocean-facing lawn just as a full moon above beyond the cliff. For your listening pleasure there’s live music in the bar/ lounge just off the main lobby from Thursday to Saturday evenings. All in all, Terranea Resort should definitely get consideration if you’re searching for a luxury getaway when you’re heading to LA.
