Secrets can be hard to keep in the City of Angels, but somehow Terranea Resort has managed to keep a low profile for a decade. A true hidden gem just 45 minutes south of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the property is the only upscale oceanside resort in the Los Angeles area. Its beauty, luxury and panoramic seascape make this retreat feel much more than a mere thirty-ish miles away from the notoriety and activity of Beverly Hills.
Located in Rancho Palos Verdes, the 102-acre cliffside property has accommodations galore with rooms, suites, casitas and villas. There are four restaurants, several pools, a wellness spa and golf course– all of which boast incredible views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. Whether you’re in LA for business or pleasure Terranea is well worth the visit. The meticulously manicured grounds are beautiful and worth the trip, even if just for the day. It’s no wonder that this is a popular wedding destination and venue.
Native Angelenos should also consider this picturesque property for Staycations and Daycations. You might even run into me and Malinda working from the expansive grounds or taking in the sunset during a picnic for two. Get even closer to the ocean via trails that hug the cliff from the highest point on the property, descending past a scenic adults-only pool overlooking the ocean and continuing down to a hidden beach, complete crashing waves that soothe the senses.
Service is excellent throughout the resort– whether you’re there for the day or an extended stay. From the moment you enter, the entire property is decorated in a Mediterranean style that adds to the sense that you are further away from Hollywood than you actually are. There are rooms for every budget– as long as you keep in mind that it’s a luxury hotel– from the main hotel structure to casitas and villas that dot the property. And all of them have a view of the ocean. On a recent Staycation, we booked a casita with a balcony overlooking the grounds and the ocean that made parting a sweet sorrow indeed.
Dining options abound at the resort and I’m pretty sure we’ve tried them all including the casual sport’s bar vibe of Nelson’s and fine dining experience at Mar’sel. Most often we opt for the asian fare at Bashi and their excellent garlic noodles. The adjacent Catalina Kitchen has a varied “New American” menu that has something for everyone and a chocolate cake that Malinda still hasn’t forgotten. And Terranea’s most recent addition, Solviva, boasts a seasonal farm to table inspired menu with wellness at it’s core– appropriate since it’s located adjacent to the spa. All of the restaurants have outdoor seating and a view of the ocean. For scenery and cuisine there are no bad options.
To keep visitors occupied, the resort programs activities as varied as nature walks, bird watching and even moonlight yoga. We’ve attended a Harvest Moon Yoga session that was equal parts soothing, exhilarating and breathtaking as we stretched, contorted, inhaled and exhaled on the ocean-facing lawn, just an enormous, full moon rose beyond the cliff. For your auditory pleasure, there’s live music in the bar/ lounge just off the main lobby from Thursday to Saturday evenings.
All in all, Terranea Resort is well worth consideration if you’re in the market for a luxury getaway in the LA-area.
